FIRAS & BM Trada Accredited

Intumescent Paint Contractors

Intumescent paint and structural steel fire protection, applied to the right thickness, evidenced with DFT readings and signed off ready for handover.
We help main contractors, fabricators and developers protect exposed steelwork to 30, 60, 90 and 120 minute fire ratings, on-site or off-site.

The Risks

Unprotected steel can fail in minutes

Steel loses strength fast

Exposed structural steel begins to lose load-bearing capacity at around 550°C - temperatures a building fire reaches within minutes.

Under-applied coatings fail early

Coatings applied below the specified dry film thickness won't deliver the rating on the drawings, and that's only spotted after the fire.

No DFT evidence, no sign-off

Building Control and warranty providers want measured DFT readings and applicator certification. Without them, sign-off stalls.
What we do

Intumescent coatings across every type of steel

On-site intumescent application

Spray and brush application to erected steel frames in live build environments.

Off-site intumescent application

Factory-applied basecoat and topcoat to fabricated steel before delivery to site.

Structural beams and columns

Primary structural members protected to 30, 60, 90 or 120 minute ratings.

Exposed steel feature work

Decorative and exposed steel finished to architectural specification with topcoats.

Cellular and castellated beams

Coatings applied to complex section profiles with full perimeter coverage.

Touch-up and remedial works

Make-good and re-coating where coatings have been damaged by follow-on trades.

Why It Matters

Intumescent coatings are what keep the building standing

Intumescent coatings expand under fire to insulate structural steel and buy time - time to evacuate, time to fight the fire and time to stop progressive collapse. Get the thickness wrong and the rating disappears.

Why It Matters

Intumescent coatings applied to standards that pass scrutiny

Intumescent coatings are only as good as the evidence behind them. We apply only third-party tested systems, work to the manufacturer's tested DFT charts, and we record DFT readings as we go.

Intumescent Coating FAQs

What is an intumescent coating?

An intumescent coating is a paint-like product applied to structural steel that expands when exposed to fire, forming an insulating char that protects the steel from reaching its critical failure temperature.

What fire ratings can you achieve?

We routinely apply coatings to deliver 30, 60, 90 and 120 minute fire resistance, depending on the steel section size and the project specification.

Do you apply coatings on-site or off-site?

Both. Off-site shop application is faster and gives a more controlled finish; on-site application is used where steel is already erected or where damage needs to be made good.

How is coating thickness checked?

We take dry film thickness (DFT) readings using calibrated gauges across every protected member. Readings are recorded against the manufacturer's required thickness for that section and rating.

Do exposed steel members need a topcoat?

Yes — where steel is visible or exposed to weather, a sealer or topcoat is applied for both aesthetic and protective reasons. We can match RAL colours to architect specification.

Can damaged coatings be repaired?

Yes. We carry out make-good and re-coating works where intumescent paint has been damaged by follow-on trades, drilling, lifting or weather exposure.

What evidence do you provide for sign-off?

A full pack including DFT readings, product data sheets, applicator certification, coating area schedules and photographic records — ready for Building Control and warranty sign-off.

Are your applicators certified?

Yes. Our applicators are third-party certified under FIRAS / TPCP schemes and trained on the specific coating systems we apply.

Why It Matters

Coating problems we're called in to put right

These are the issues that come up again and again on inspection, usually because the wrong product was used, or the right product was applied too thin.
Coatings applied below specified DFT
Wrong product for the steel section
Damage from follow-on trades
Missing topcoat in exposed locations
No DFT readings recorded
Cracking or debonding from poor surface prep
Mixed products across the same frame
No applicator certification on file
