Fire Door Regulations & Compliance

Fire doors are a crucial element in passive fire protection, and their design, installation, and maintenance are governed by a set of stringent regulations in the UK. These regulations aim to ensure that fire doors perform effectively in preventing the spread of fire and smoke within a building.

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

The primary legislation relating to fire safety in non-domestic premises in England and Wales.

This order requires that a 'responsible person' undertakes regular fire risk assessments, which includes ensuring fire doors are correctly specified, installed, and maintained.

It places the responsibility on building owners, managers, and employers to ensure that all fire safety measures, including fire doors, are adequate and effective.

British Standards (BS)

BS 8214 provides guidance on the installation of fire doors and their maintenance.

BS 9999 provides a code of practice for fire safety in the design, management, and use of buildings.

BS EN 1634-1 provides guidance and methods for fire resistance and smoke control tests for door, shutter, and openable window assemblies and elements of building hardware.

BS 476-22 provides guidance for fire tests on building materials and structures.

Building Regulations 2010 – Part B
(Fire Safety)

Relates to fire safety measures in buildings and includes provisions about fire doors.

Requires that fire doors are self-closing and are capable of resisting the spread of fire long enough for occupants to escape.
